Throwflake 2024
The Story:
I led the industrial design of Throwflake 2024, a limited-edition EDC accessory that reimagines the snowflake tool through a refined, sculptural lens. The design focused on creating a precise, symmetrical form that balanced visual impact with functional versatility. Working from early sketch exploration through CAD development, I refined edge detailing, tool integration, and surface finishes to achieve a distinct yet utilitarian aesthetic. The final product captures the spirit of play and collectibility while staying true to the brand’s minimalist design ethos.
The challenge:
One of the main challenges in designing the Throwflake 2024 was evolving a familiar, often novelty-driven tool into something that felt intentional, premium, and collectible. The goal was to transform the snowflake form into a sculptural object that still delivered real utility—without compromising on The James Brand’s minimalist design language. This required careful negotiation between form and function: integrating usable tool features like hex drivers and wrenches while maintaining clean geometry and satisfying symmetry. Achieving crisp edges, fine surface transitions, and a refined profile pushed both design and manufacturing constraints, ultimately resulting in a product that felt both iconic and functional.
